Autumn Owl Collages

This awesome autumn owl collage is ideal for toddlers and pre-schoolers working on shape recognition, as well as for their older siblings to enjoy alongside them.

Ahead of the activity, I cut out circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, stars and diamonds from red, yellow and orange paper to reflect the colours of autumn. I then laid these out across the table before sitting the kids down to do the activity.

Making collages is one of our favourite activities to do together. They are easy to set up and to adapt to suit all ages and levels of ability.

How to make a Shape Recognition Owl Collage

I drew basic owl outlines for my youngest children (aged 2 and 4) and my 6 year old son took full charge of his picture and he drew his own outline.  We talked about what shapes would work best for the eyes, ears, wings and the owl plumage.  I made suggestions, but ultimately my boys in particular made their own decisions and both did their pictures a little differently. After sticking on their shapes, the boys then wanted to add in extra feathers using a pencil and a pen.

It is important to encourage your children to put their own stamp onto their activities. This is great for their confidence, as well as growing their creativity.

My 2 year old daughter didn’t really get into this craft as much as I had hoped. She mainly just wanted to stick googly eyes onto her picture! But this is all part of the fun of sitting down to do arts and crafts with a toddler!

She was happier though when we put the glue down and started to play a little “Find the Shape” game with her. The boys asked her to find different shapes for them for their collages. She didn’t get it right every time, but it certainly cheered her up. She loves to feel like a “big girl” alongside her brothers and it managed to distract her from spoiling their collages as well which is always a bonus.
